To reiterate the circumstances surrounding the EU's 2006 ban on antibiotic growth promoters (AGP's) is, one would hope, unnecessary at this juncture, given that this publication, no less than others, has committed an enormous number of column space tothe subject. However, in the rush to find practical solutions, there has been comparatively time given to debating the issues and their implications on a worldwide scale. In the spirit of true debate that delegates from as far afield as Australia and Canada (and most points in between) met up in Noordwijk aan Zee on the Dutch coast recently to discuss the issues of antimicrobial resistance: where we stand now; and how livestock production (and the feed industry in particular) can play an active part in preventing the situation from deteriorating further.
