Dentistry has seen a number of radical changes in recent years, no more so than in relation to the role of dental care professionals. Several of these innovations were as a result of the Nuffield Foundation inquiry in 1993, which culminated in the publication of Education and Training of Personnel Auxiliary to Dentistry} This visionary document encouraged flexibility in the delivery of dental care, suggesting that oral health needs of the population could be met by a variety of professionals, each possessing specific skills.
