The commonality of glass & ceramics

An exploration of the commonalities between glass and ceramics may point to otherwise elusive solutions to problems faced regularly in the manufacturing plant. To the glass engineer, ceramics should not be thought of as a mundane low tech field made up of bricks, tile, and refractory. Neither should the ceramic technologist assume that glass is a single generic material, of limited applicability and innovation to the contemporary materials scientist. Either perception, besides being dead wrong, shackles thinking in the pursuit of resolving materials science challenges. This conviction will be revisited in these pages in the coming months.
