O MOST OUTSIDERS Sri Lanka is a far-away touristdestination, a tropical para-dise that has fallen into avicious cycle of ethnic con-flict. To me it is closer to home. It is whereI grew up; and Colombo, the capital city, ismy hometown. I think of Sri Lanka as aheaven-and-hell country, consumed by itsown extremes and contradictions. Theseplay out at today's crossroads, with theseeming end of a 26-year military conflict.
