Whitefly-transmitted viral diseases to watch for in greenhouse vegetables: management strategies for these viruses must necessarily target the whitefly vector itself

The whitefly in question here is the sweet potato whitefly (SWF) (Bemisia tabaci). This whitefly species has numerous biotypes (a biotype is a population that is distinguished from the rest of its species by criteria other than physical characters,such as being adapted to a specific plant host or type of environment) of which the most common is biotype B. also called the silver leaf whitefly, or more specifically. Bemisia argentifolii. In most greenhouse vegetable crops, it is the greenhouse whitefly (GWF) or Trialeurodes vaporariorum that is most prevalent. Some of the viruses that the SWF transmits in greenhouse crops include the Tomato Yellow Leaf Curl Virus (TYLCV) in tomatoes, and Cucumber Yellow Stunting Disorder Virus (CYSDV) and Cucumber Vein Yellowing Virus (CVYV) in cucumbers, all of which, to date, have not yet been detected - or at least reported - in Canada.
