The ability of pests and diseases to develop resistance to pesticides is probably the single most critical issue we have to deal with in pest management. However, at the risk of sounding trite, even the cloud of resistance has a silver lining. Resistance has arguably been the driving force behind the development and adoption of IPM and biological control. Certainly the environmental and health issues associated with many older pesticides would have eventually resulted in change, but the development of resistance accelerated the process.
