Although most observers don't know what it is, the Dew Simulator turns heads as it runs through California alfalfa fields. Most alfalfa growers probably have never heard of or even seen the contraption because there is only one of its kind working inthe entire state of California. Richard Felipe of Hanford, who owns a custom alfalfa harvesting business operates the Dew Simulator, a machine that injects steam into windrowed alfalfa as it is picked up and baled. An entrepreneur from Utah, who shies away from publicity, invented the system because of the lack of nighttime moisture that occurs in Utah's dry climate. Over the past few years he has put at least one Dew Simulator prototype in each of the alfalfa growing regions of the western states.
