The wild Muscovy (Cairina moschata) is native to Central and South America and the family is a member of the perching duck family. All other domestic ducks are descended from the mallard, but Muscovies have been domesticated since before the Spanish invaded South America inthe 1500s. The wild version has much less of the typical caruncles (enlarged and coloured skin areas) on the face and tends to be smaller and mostly black in colour. The South American Indians developed the birds for both meat and eggs, and of course the birds were happy in their natural climate. The domestic version is much larger and comes in many different colours but still likes to perch.
