Growers face the bad, the ugly and the obscene

EVERY SPRING GROWERS face insect, disease and physiological problems, and spring 2007 was no exception.Here are some problems I consider "bad" because they aren't due to growers' mistakes or bad decisions. The usual suspects — thrips, spider mites, Pythium, Rhizoctonia and Botrytis — were not problems for most growers as long as they were discovered before major damage occurred. However, oedema, broad mite, Sclerotinia (white mold) and air pollution were tougher to control.
