Semantic Mining in Biomedicine (Introduction to the papers selected from the SMBM 2005 Symposium, Hinxton, U.K., April 2005)

Researchers working in the life sciences domain in the past years have witnessed an enormous growth of literature-for the whole field as well as for their highly specialized areas of expertise. Only small portions of the biomedical knowledge are accessible in a structured way, i.e. through formatted databases. These few pieces of textually encoded knowledge that have gone into databases are, by default, manually extracted from documents and manually inserted into databases after careful curation efforts by highly skilled domain experts. Still, the vast majority of biomedical knowledge captured in texts is not at disposal when biomedical databases are queried.
