The Swedish Deep Drilling Program: For Science and Society

The Swedish Deep Drilling Program (SDDP) has been initiated to study fundamental problems of the dynamic Earth system, its natural history and evolution. Many key scientific questions can only be addressed through scientific drilling; some are unique to Scandinavia. Researchers with diverse backgrounds from major universities in Sweden met to define key problems that require drilling into 'Swedish' bedrock and to develop scientific drilling proposals that rest on three cornerstones: basic research, applied research and benefit for society.
