RESEARCH IN GEOGRAPHIC INFORMATION SYSTEMS, DATA MANAGEMENT AND DISSEMINATION, AND NEW GEOSPATIAL TECHNOLOGIES

Laval University's Department of Geomatics Sciences is celebrating its 100th anniversary. During this century, it has become a leader in its field, and more specifically in the last 20 years. Many factors contributed to this success, such as the first B.Sc, in Geomatics in the world, the arrival of a new generation of professors highly involved in research, and the creation of the Centre for Research in Geomatics (CRG) and the GEOIDE network of excellence. Leading the way, Laval's GIS team has played a key role in establishing this leadership through strong education and collaborations, multi-million-dollar R&D projects and chairs, and numerous scientific contributions (e.g. journal papers, conferences, technology transfers, and industrial innovations). The goal of this paper is to summarize these activities. After the introduction and a brief history, we present an overview of today's situation, Then, in order to give a taste of the diversity of current research projects, we cover project samples according to four themes: systems engineering, new technologies, usage concerns, and transdisciplinary innovations. Several references provide more information on these projects.
