Trend and Pattern of Landuse/Land Cover Change in Kolkata Using Urban Agglomeration Geionformatic Techniques

To set a desirable direction in planning for development and sustainable environment trend and pattern of change of landuse and landcover in urban areas is essential to know. There has been continual increase of population and expansion of built-up areas in Kolkata Urban Agglomeration (UA) over decades. Thereby there has been a change in landuse and landcover in Kolkata and surrounding areas. Using multi-date satellite imageries and Remote Sensing (RS) techniques changes in landuse have been estimated in this study. Four Landsat Images of 1977, 1990, 2000 and 2010 are taken to consider and evaluate the change in the area within this span of around 33 years. Images have been classified digitally with the ISODATA technique of unsupervised classification which are verified and validated by the process of accuracy assessment. Overall accuracy assessment for all the images has been more than 75 percent. It is evident from the classified images of three decades that there is urban expansion at the cost of other features i.e., agricultural, vegetation and wetland. Water bodies have shown the minimal change over the study period.
