Imaging Ionic Liquids: Clarifying the Interface Structure on the Molecular Scale

Driven by promising applications in electrochemical material processing and energy science, room temperature ionic liquids (RTILs) are currently a subject of intense research. Recently for the first time video-rate scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM) images were recorded that reveal the dynamic structure of the molecular ions in these liquids near a metal electrode.
