Confocal Raman Microscopy: A Versatile Tool in the Development of Semi-solid Dosage Forms

Semi-solid formulations, such as creams and ointments, may be used to deliver an active pharmaceutical ingredient (api) to the skin (local therapy) or to the systemic circulation (transdermal therapy). Confocal Raman microscopy can be a useful tool in the development and analysis of such demanding semisolid systems. Confocality, high resolution and simultaneous determination of chemical distribution make CRM a useful tool in the development of semisolid dosage forms. CRM is of special interest in this field as it provides a novel and promising approach for a non-invasive drug profiling in skin. Future research will assess its usefulness for the analysis of drug penetration from dermal formulations.
