The vacuum tubing between vacuum pump and chamber normally does not attract much attention. But it is very important for the performance of the complete system especially in the fine vacuum range below 1 mbar. In fact, choosing a suitable tubing with a large cross section and short length might make it possible to use a smaller and lower priced vacuum pump. Typically rubber tubing as often used in chemistry laboratories is hardly suitable for such vacuum applications. Novel flexible corrugated hoses made of PTFE with almost smooth inside walls are the ideal connection element for many vacuum applications in chemistry, working with large vapour volumes or at a process vacuum below 10 mbar. "A chain is only as strong as its weakest link" is also true for vacuum systems e.g. in chemistry laboratories. Often a powerful vacuum pump with low ultimate vacuum is chosen with the best of intentions to accelerate a vacuum process. However, the influence of the vacuum components and especially of the vacuum tubing on the total system performance is often neglected.
