Shell faces GBP 55 million payout for Niger Delta oil spill

Shell has agreed a GBP 55 million (USD 84 million) compensation package with the Bodo community in Nigeria, ending a lengthy court battle over two oil spills in 2008, the company said this week. Shell said on Wednesday that it plans to allocate GBP 35 million for compensation for losses by individual claimants arising from the spills in the Niger Delta. It is thought that each member of the Bodo community will receive approximately GBP 2,200.
