Alaskan environmental groups challenge Shell’s Beaufort drilling plans

A Native Alaskan group and coalition of environmental groups filed a petition with the US federal government on Tuesday in a bid to overturn the US administration’s approval of Shell’s plan to drill for oil and gas in Alaska’s Beaufort Sea. In October, the US Minerals Management Service (MMS) gave conditional approval for Shell’s plan to drill wells next year during the open-water season at two leases located about 16 to 23 miles north of Point Thomson (see Gas Matters Today, October 20).
