Here we present the synthesis and properties of quinoline-substituted zinc(II) phthalocyanine, Zn[Pc(O-QN)4]. Zn [Pc(O-QN)(4)] can function as a highly selective chemosensor against Fe3+ and Zn2+ ions, exhibiting efficient fluorescence quenching and enhancement, respectively. Various characterization techniques were employed to investigate the intermolecular interactions of Zn[Pc(O-QN)(4)] with metal ions. A double-electron exchange and a forbidden photoinduced electron transfer behavior in Zn[Pc(O-QN)(4)] were attributed to such opposite responses. Furthermore, by taking advantage of selectivity, we successfully employed Zn[Pc(O-QN) 4] to stain and record confocal fluorescence microscopy images of Chang liver cells in the presence of metal ions.
