This year's MINSA activities were once-again arranged through the voluntary efforts of our Executive Committee: Thinus Cloete, (Vice Chairman), Hanna Horsch, Lesley Andrews, Wolfgang Maier and Jill Richards (Secretary/Treasurer). The Executive Committee were fortunate to have the assistance of a large number of members who were co-opted from academia and industry. The MINSA membership currently stands at just under 250 of whom 19 are overseas members and almost 100 are student members. The highlight of this year's calendar was undoubtedly the MINSA AGM held in April to coincide with the Student Geocongress and the first of the GSSA's Annual Meetings at Mintek. A large number of students attended the AGM which was followed by a talk entitled the "Role of the Mineralogist in Industry". It was very gratifying to have several of the students also taking the opportunity to join MINSA at the same time. The AGM was followed by a finger buffet where the students had the opportunity to mix with MINSA members from both the universities and industry and to learn more about the society and mineralogy in general. The AGM was also the occasion for awarding the MINSA book prize to this year's recipient, Michelle Safranek, an Honour's graduate of the Geology Department of the University of the Witwatersrand.
