The Bushveld Branch of the GSSA has been as active as usual in last 6 months with talks, fieldtrips and a short course. On the 4th Marc a talk was given by Roland Merkle from the University of Pretoria on "Small Scale Geochemical Variations in the UG2 Reef" This was held at the Mooi Nooi golf club and sponsored by Lakefields. Rolands talk provided an detailed and provoking insight into the complexities and variations in geochemistry and PGE content on a microscale in the UG2 reef horizon. On Sunday 30th March a visit was made to the Sterkfontein cave system in the Cradle of Humankind World Heritage Site. Able leadership from John Hancox and Darryl de Ruiter, both from the University of the Witwatersrand, made it a memorable day out. The Sterkfontein trip provided a superb stage for the presentation of a captivating review of the hominid history of the Heritage area by Darryl.
