Mattheus Casparus du Toit was born in the town of Uitenhage in the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa on 27 November 1936. Soon afterwards his parents moved to Bloemfontein where he also started his school career at Noordskool (Kruitberg). After finishing primary school he continued his high school careen at Sentraal High School where he matriculated in 1954. He registered for a B.Sc. degree at the University of the Orange Free State and graduated in 1957. It was time for the young graduate to spread his wings and Matt commenced his geological career as an exploration geologist in 1958 with Namwala Concessions in Zambia where he was tasked with regional mapping, geochemical soil sampling and the drilling of potential gold targets. In 1960 he joined Roan Selection Trust and became involved in the mapping and sampling of small gold mines in the greenstone belt north of Bulawayo and the Mangula-Sinoia, Doma and Birchenough Bridge areas in Zimbabwe.
