Symposium: New PGE Exploration & Mining Projects in Southern Africa

The surge in PGE prices in the late 1990's heightened interest in the platinum group elements (PGEs) and resulted in unprecedented activity in securing, exploring and exploiting new PGE deposits globally and in southern Africa in particular. In response, several symposia have been held this year dealing with matters relating to the PGEs-including the 9~(th) International Platinum Symposium which was held at Stillwater in the USA in July this year. A cheaper and more convenient opportunity to share information on the platinum industry in southern Africa was provided by a two-day symposium organised by the Directorate of Professional Programmes of the Geological Society and held at Mintek on 9~(th) and 10~(th) October. Around 130 delegates from as far afield as Cape Town, Durban-and one delegate from Ghana-attended the symposium.
