The economy of protected areas through balance analysis.

An account is given of the development of policies for protected areas in Italy, and data are tabulated for the area, amount of use and benefits of national and regional parks and nature reserves. Details are given of the costs incurred in 1998-2000 for the management of the Gran Paradiso and Pollino national parks, of their economic and functional classification and their importance for the environment in Italy. Data are presented in 10 tables and 7 graphs..
