Protected areas and recreational activities: a survey in the Bellunesi Dolomites national park.

The national park covers 32 000 ha in the foothills of the Dolomite Mountains, NE Italy. Two surveys were carried out during the summer of 1998: a census of the number of visitors arriving in Val Canzoi by car; and a more qualitative questionnaire survey. The data are analysed, and discussed, focusing on socioeconomic characteristics of visitors to the park, and recreational activities enjoyed by visitors. Three main types of visitor activity were discerned: those who only visited the valley; day-visitors to the valley; and visitors who stayed in mountain refuges or bivouacs. The economic costs and benefits to the region from visitor activities are estimated.
