An evaluation of the economics of waste water purification for small-scale use: a comparison between a system which utilizes active sludge and a phyto-purification system.

A cost efficiency analysis was undertaken to evaluate the use of contrasting waste water purification systems. A typical activated sludge system was compared to newer 'organic' systems which utilize either horizontal or vertical reed-bed filtration.The systems were analysed with respect to their utilization in small communities (between 50 and 2000 inhabitants) in Italy. The analysis indicated that the new purification systems may be as cost efficient as present systems, and some features of the water filtration system (reed beds, small lakes and lagoons) may enhance the landscape.
