Requiem to the PONGOLA SUPERGROUP

The Pongola Supergroup is a large outlier correlated to the most representative columns of the Witwatersrand, Ventersdorp and Transvaal Supergroups, near the centre of the Kaapvaal Craton. Everywhere on it, portions of these type rock layers are preserved, either on outcrop or under younger cover, defining a unique Kaapvaal Province (Fig. I) stratigraphy. Cheney and Winter (1995) subdivided the succession after tracing interregional unconformities (Winter 1989) across the Kaapvaal, recognising marker successions between them and noting ages of dated rock bodies.
