Cemeteries as landscape heritage: Claire de Carle describes a volunteer project to record Aylesbury Cemetery

Buckinghamshire Gardens Trust Research and Recording project (with generous HLF funding) is well under way. Volunteers are engaged in evaluating sites and carrying out research at the County Records Office, the Historic Environment Register (HER) andby visiting gardens. As part of our training, Dr Sarah Rutherford was keen for us to research a cemetery. These important green spaces are often a focus for local communities. We are keen that they are understood so they will be maintained and preservedfor future generations. Since the criteria for recording these sites are slightly different to domestic parks and gardens, we felt this would be valuable practice for volunteers, especially as some of them would be working on local cemeteries.
