AMONG MY FAVOURITE PLANTS are primulas, the harbingers of spring. Belonging to this much loved family are the drumstick primulas, Primula denticulata which, whether planted beside a pond, or beneath deciduous trees, are sure to give pleasure in the garden, These hardy soldiers burst into life in spring, their fat, round buds appearing in March as snowdrops are carpeting the ground, The buds emerge at ground level and open into globular balls of flower, 7,5cm (Sin) across and each emblazoned with a yellow eye, on short stems, up to 30cm (12in) high, The tightly packed flowers, which last all the way into May, give the plant its common name and reach a crescendo of colour as the rosette of pale green leaves start to expand.
