On an ordinary midsummer morning just over a decade ago a young student working at Kew Gardens made a discovery which would trigger an international breeding race The discovery was the seedling of an entirely new-coloured verbascum and the student wasHelen Johnson. Her finding sent breeders into a frenzy and spawned the fastest-selling verbascum of all time - V 'Helen Johnson'. Butthis summer she may be toppled from her throne as four national nurseries release stunning newperennialverbascums. And there are lots more on the way.
