GE officials announced last month that coal gasification has begun at one of the world's largest coal-to-olefins projects successfully started up at the China Shenhua Coal to Liquid and Chemical Co. project in Baotou, Inner Mongolia. The plant taps GE gasification technology to convert coal into a synthesis gas, which can then converted to methanol. Methanol in turn will be transformed into olefins (MTO), a building block for producing polyethylene and polypropylene.
