Rudolf Virchow was arguably the preeminent life scientist in nineteenth-century Germany. Although he made fundamental contributions to the development of cell biology, anthropometry, human adaptability, and epidemiology, his memory in physical anthropology is generally reduced to a single act: rejecting the earliest fossil evidence of human evolution, in the forms of ‘‘Neanderthal Man’’ and ‘‘Java Man.’
