Editorial Comment on: Pelvic Floor Reconstruction in Female Exstrophic Complex Patients: Different Results from Males?

The importance of pubic re approximation in front of the reconstructed bladder to achieve continence was first introduced by Trendelenburg in 1881 . In the 1960s and 1970s several large series of patients submitted to single-stage reconstruction reported continence rates of only 10-30% . In 1982, Montagnani described a one-stage functional bladder reconstruction in two female babies, achieving continence in one of them without further surgery . More recently, new techniques of single reconstruction aimed at ameliorating urinary con- tinence have been advocated by Mitchell, Fuchs, Kelly, and others.
