The day before Christmas we moved cows down near the house. We sorted out those that will be calving fust and all the first-calf heifers, putting them into the maternity pen where we can watch them at night. The heifers gentle down quickly once we start walking through them at night. It was -6°F, then warmed up, and we had 10 days of rainy weather. It melted all our snow. The frost went out of the ground, making our maternity pens a sea of mud. It became impossible to drive through with the feed truck.
