UK onion conference highlights current trends: Topics as varied as varietal development and export growth were up for discussion at the recent British Onion Producers' Association conference

THE international onion market is expected to become more competitive in future with a stronger presence from the new members of the European Union, the UK industry was warned in November at the biannual conference of the British Onion Producers' Association (BOPA). The association, which represents virtually the whole UK industry, estimates its members will produce around 3 76,000 tonnes of brown, red and trademarked Supasweet onions this season, 1.5 per cent down on 2004.
