What Can Cutans Tell Us About?

Any pedologist with experience in field studies knows well that soil material is heterogeneous and is differentiated by the elements of soil macro-, meso-, and microfabrics. In particular, these are films developing on the surface of soil aggregates and in the fissures and pores. Their morphology and composition differ from the intraped mass and from the mass of the enclosing horizon. Such pedofeatures are known under different names (films, pendants, crusts, etc.), but the term cutans suggested by R. Brewer in 1964 has gained the widest recognition.
