Ethology has a long tradition, not only in publishing excellent behavioural research but also in an impressive tenure of its chief editors. Otto Koehler held this position for 30 yr. Wolfgang Wickler handed over as Editor-in-Chief after 32 yr of successful leadership at the end of 1999 to Michael Taborsky. I had assumed that Michael would have at least another 20 yr to go. When he asked me whether I would like to take over his role, an initial disbelief was soon followed by realising the huge responsibility and the big shoes of my predecessors that I would be expected to fill. Hence, it took me a while to digest this proposal and to appreciate the great honour of following in the footsteps of Otto Koehler, Wolfgang Wickler and Michael Taborsky.
