Commercializing the palaeoenvironment

This paper attempts to assess the relationship between environmental archaeology and developer funded research in Britain. The typical developer funded cycle is outlined and the ways in which environmental archaeology has been integrated into the various stages is discussed. An attempt is made to highlight some of the problems and misunderstandings that often occur and some possible solutions are offered. In particular the need to establish proper mechanisms for communication between field staff and specialists is highlighted as well as the need to ensure that a continuous assessment of any sampling strategy is maintained during the course of the fieldwork.
