Months of intensive nursing and expert farriery care restore the health and soundness of a special Morgan mare. The day had finally come: I had found my dream horse. After moving from New England to Ocala, Florida, I'd spent the better part of six months searching. Then I spotted an ad in the local newspaper— 11-year-old chestnut mare, registered Morgan, impeccable ground manners, great trail horse. I knew I had to see her. Excited and anxious, I went out to the seller's farm. There I met Gracie, who was everything the ad had promised: quiet, mannerly and a wonderful ride. She was quite overweight but otherwise perfect. The next evening I took my two best friends to see her for a second opinion. They, too, were impressed with Gracie, and I wrote the check that night. The day that my new mare got off the trailer was one of the happiest of my life. For the next three or four weeks, Gracie seemed to be adjusting well to my five-acre farm, befriending my retired 20-something Quarter Horse gelding. Sheand I were building a relationship slowly but surely, and we began to form a bond that I knew would last her lifetime.Then our nightmare began.
