Chironomus improvisus sp. n. (Diptera, Chironomidae) from the Ust'-Lenskii Nature Reserve

The karyotype and morphology of the larva, pupa, and adult female of Chironomus improvisus sp. n. are described. The new species is very close to Ch. holomelas in the morphology of larva and the karyotype, but differs in the band sequence of chromosome arm A and structure of ventral tubules. Several expeditions to the Arctic and Subarctic areas of Russia were carried out by researchers of the Institute for Biology of Inland Waters, Russian Academy of Sciences, in 1990-1992. The fauna of Chironomidaefrom the Ust'-Lenskii Nature Reserve was studied on the material of 1990; an annotated list including 125 species of 6 families was published (Ze-lentsov and Shilova, 1996). In this paper, larvae were identified from the karyotype in the only species ofthe genus Chironomus, Ch. saxatilis (Shobanov and Pet-rova, 1995). At that time, I failed to identify other Chironomus species (about 20) from this area. It was suggested that all or most of them are new.
