A New Pest from a Greenhouse of St. Petersburg, Rhizoecus dianthi Green (Homoptera, Pseudococcidae), with Karyotype Data

Rhizoecus dianthi Green, a dangerous pest of ornamental plants, was found in greenhouses of St. Petersburg for the first time. Short morphological description, figure, and karyotype data with illustrations are given. In the summer of 2007 a mealy-bugidentified by us as Rhizoecus dianthi Green was discovered by E.V. Drugova, chief entomologist of the Quarantine and Plant Defense Department of St. Petersburg in the greenhouse of the Forest-Technical Academy of St. Petersburg. This is a polyphagous pest of flowering plants, widely known in greenhouses of America and Europe. In Russia it was noted only for Moscow in the greenhouses of the Main Botanical Garden RAS (Ko-zarzhevskaya, 1992). St. Petersburg is the second locality of this pest in Russia.
