A New Record of Termites of the Genus Hodotermopsis Holmgren, 1911 (Isoptera, Hodotermitidae) from Vietnam and Discussion of the Taxonomic Status of H. japonicus Holmgren, 1912

A detailed description is given of a new finding of termites from the genus Hodotermopsis with morphological and morphometric diagnoses of soldiers (43 specimens). A new synonymy is ascertained: Hodotermopsis sjostedti Holmgren, 1911 = H. japonicus Holmgren, 1912, syn. n. The genus Hodotermopsis of the subfamily Ter-mopsinae (family Hodotermitidae) comprises two species, H. sjostedti Holmgren, 1911 and H. japonicus Holmgren, 1912; they are distributed only in southeastern Asia (Japan, China, Vietnam). Original descriptions of these termites are restricted to brief characteristics of the soldier caste accompanied by low-grade photographs (Holmgren, 1911, 1912). More explicit descriptions and detailed figures of the soldier and worker of H. japonicuswere given by Hozawa (1915). Both species are considered in the paper by Emerson (1933), in which, in addition to full descriptions of soldiers and nymphs, their comparison and diagnoses accompanied by figures are given. The imago of H. sjostedti was first described and illustrated in the monograph of Chinese entomologists (Huang et al., 1989).
