Algal parasites of the genera Aphelidium, Amoeboaphelidium, and Pseudaphelidium from cienkowski's 'monadinea' group as representatives of a new class

The available data on the structure and biology of algal parasites belonging to genera of unclear systematic position, Aphelidium, Amoeboaphelidium and Pseudaphelidium, are reviewed. The opinion is substantiated that these organisms are to be regarded as belonging to Protozoa and, probably, to Rhizopoda. It is proposed that a new class, Aphelidea, should be created. Diagnoses of the class and the taxa it comprises are presented. The forms considered have specific features of both fungi and animals.These organisms appear to have originated from some Rhizopoda during the evolution of Protozoa before the divergence of fungi and animals.
