A Dedication to the Memory of Eliska Nováková (1921-2000), One of the Founders of the Study of Environmental Bioindicators

Dr. Eliska Nováková, who passed away in Prague in 2000, is considered by her colleagues to be one of the founders of the field of bioindicators or bioindication. She was a dedicated resarcher, teacher, colleague and friend. Eliska published 34 books, monographies and coursebooks, more than 130 original scientific papers and 90 papers in conference proceedings as well as 70 popular articles on bioindicators, game mangement, applied ecology and the effects of air pollution on the environment. She contributed to the fields of applied ecology and landscape ecology at a time when these fields of ecology were just emerging. Her studies on bioindication of air pollution came at a time (1960s, 70s, and 80s) when there was not official governmental recognition of the deteriorating environment in Czechoslovakia. Through her scientific research she was recognized as a strong advocate for environmental protection. Because of this dedication and understanding of the environmental conditions in Czechoslovakia in 1990 she was asked by the World Bank to be the lead Czech scientist assisting them in assessing the environmental conditions in her country after the regime change.
