A field trial was conducted on soybean (var SL 525)-wheat (var PBW-343) in a system during kharif and rabi season of 2006-07 and 2007-08 on loamy sand soil consisting of 12 treatment combinations laid out in split plot design and replicated three times with three bed plantings viz., fresh beds (FB), permanent beds (PB) and alternate beds (FB/PB) in main plots, two crop, residue management, viz., residue incorporation/mulching (R) and no incorporationo mulching (Ro) and two seed ratesitrogen levels viz., 75 kg/ha (S100) and 93.75 kg/ha (S125)/90 kg N/ha (N90) and 120 kg N/ha (N120) in sub-plots. Results revealed that soybean, treatment R recorded significantly higher DMA, higher LAI, and higher root density, higher nodules and dry weight of nodules than R0. However, S100 recorded significantly Sower DMA, lower LAI and significantly higher nodules and dry weight of nodules than S125 treatment. FB, S125/N120 produced similar yields with PB, FB/PB and S100/N90 in both crops. The treatment R produced significantly higher seed yield of soybean (22.6 q/ha) than R0 (20.8 q/ha). In wheat, plant height, DMA, LAI and effective tillers were higher under FB, R and N120 treatments than PB, FB/PB, R0 and N90. However R treatment recorded higher grain yield (41.1 q/ha) than R0 (40.9 q/ha).
