Effects of different concentrations (0, 1, 10, 100 and 1000 ppm) of mercury and manganese and their various combinations on seed germination, seedling growth, and fresh and dry weight of mung bean seedlings were studied. Percentage germination was 100% with 0-10 ppm Hg, 96% at 100 ppm Hg and 8% at 1000 ppm Hg. Percentage germination was 100% with up to 100 ppm Mn, and 96% at 1000 ppm Mn. Seedling growth was stimulated by 1 ppm Hg and decreased at higher concentrations, with 1000 ppm Hg killing theseedlings. Seedling growth was stimulated by up to 10 ppm Mn. Manganese ameliorated the toxic effects of lower Hg concentrations.
