In the 1990s, various street protests put a spotlight on globalisation. Originally confined within the financial and academic worlds, globalisation describes today everything that is happening across boundaries, from financial matters to technologicalinterdependence. This concept illustrates the increased interconnectedness in political, economic and cultural matters across the world: a transformation in the spatial organisation of social relations and transactions, due to an increase in transboundary flows of capital, people and activities.1 The more globalised the world is, the more interconnected it becomes.
