The blast furnace in one form or another has been around for over 2,000 years. Throughout history, it has had to withstand fierce criticism and competition. Despite innovations in the area of smelting reduction and the development of the electric arc furnace, the integrated steelmaking route remains the only viable option for large-scale, cost-competitive production of steel. Better understanding of the blast furnace process, highly improved ore preparation, increased installation reliability and longevity, and in particular the inventions of the basic oxygen steelmaking process and the continuous caster, have contributed to the fact that the integrated route still guarantees the lowest cost per ton of steel. The construction of new greenfield blast furnace plants and the upgrade of existing plants is the most effective way to fill the world's evergrowing demand for high-quality steel with optimum forming characteristics, especially in emerging markets. Danieli Corus blast furnace technology is based on vast experience accumulated during almost 90 years of steel production. Given this extensive experience, Danieli Corus has been able to develop proven technologies based on an integrated technical and operational approach: knowing how and why technology works best makes the design philosophy more solid and the end result more sustainable and durable. Improved raw material properties, higher blast temperatures along with oxygen enrichment and auxiliary fuel injection and better understanding of the Blast Furnace process have contributed to enhanced performance of blast furnace installations. With furnace productivities having more than tripled over the last 50 years, auxiliary systems have had to similarly improve.
