Usinor Plans to Buy Italian Service Centre

Usinor is strengthening its presence in the Italian coated steel market with the acquisition of a service centre near Naples. The European Union competition authorities are currently reviewing the deal for the French steelmaker to take control of Tubisud Italia, which operates an 80,000 tonne per year coil painting line as well as lines for slitting, cutting to length and roll-forming. Italy's Gruppo Abate is selling Tubisud, which processes only flat products. Usinor became one of the leading players in coated sheets in Italy in 1997 when it bought the much larger La Magona d 'Italia cold rolling mill and coating plant in Piombino. Tubisud is due to become a service centre for La Magona after the deal.
