Of gem proposes simpler, fairer energy tariffs for households

Ofgem is consulting on plans for a package of what it calls simpler, clearer and fairer measures to improve the competitiveness of the household energy market. This follows a commitment to tackle problems of tariff complexity, poor supplier behaviour and lack of transparency identified in its review of the retail market, says the regulator. This autumn has seen well-publicised rows about whether energy suppliers are confusing customers with the complexity of their tariffs, with Prime Minister David Cameron intervening at one point to suggest that the government will force suppliers to put customers on the lowest tariff.
